She Works Hard For The Money

She Works Hard For The Money

I had to follow the “B” side “I Do Believe (I Fell In Love) with the other side, which is “She Works Hard For The Money” from the album with the same name from 1983 which became her biggest hit since 1979 and put Donna Summer back in the spotlight as a Dance/Pop Diva.

I Do Believe (I Fell In Love)

I Do Believe (I Fell In Love)

I have no idea why, of all of the Donna Summer albums in my collection, “She Works Hard For The Money” is nowhere to be found. I know I’ve heard the hit title song about a million times and never get tired of it, but somehow this album has eluded me. Upon record hunting in my local thrift shop I came upon the 45 of “She Works Hard For The Money” and on the B-side was the ballad “I Do Believe (I Fell In Love)” I have heard this song before, but forgot about it and thought, hey that would make a great track for Valentine’s week. So here goes, our first Donna Summer ballad as our Donna Track of the week. Happy Valentine’s Day, and don’t forget to get your requests, dedications and shout-outs in for our “Love Disco Style” program airing this Valentine’s Day.

Wasted

Wasted

No, Donna’s not referring to being “wasted” as in drunk or high, just lovelorn from the loss of her love.
From her 1976 album, “A Love Trilogy” one of our favorites!
We will be featuring “Wasted” in regular rotation this week.

Walk Away

Walk Away

Here’s another favorite track from Donna’s “Bad Girls” Album. It will be our track of the week for the Queen of Disco.

Bad Girls is the seventh studio album by American pop singer Donna Summer, released April 25, 1979 on Casablanca Records. Originally issued as a double album, it incorporates such musical styles as pop-disco, soul, rock, funk and country . Bad Girls became the best-selling album of Summer’s recording career, achieving triple platinum sales certification in the United States, and selling approximately five million copies total worldwide. Down, Deep Inside…

Down, Deep Inside...

Donna Summer’s contribution to the 1977 film, “The Deep” starring Nick Nolte and Jaqueline Bisset. She co-wrote it with composer John Barry, who scored the movie. Based on a novel by Peter Benchley (Jaws).
A pair of young vacationers are involved in a dangerous conflict with treasure hunters when they discover a way into a deadly wreck in Bermuda waters. Featuring extended underwater sequences and a look into the affairs of treasure hunting. (IMDB)
The song is pure Donna, channeling her sensual vocal style. It is kind of old fashioned yet seductive & romantic.

Carry On

Carry On

This weeks Donna Summer track of the week:

Carry On” is a song written by Giorgio Moroder and Marietta Waters and recorded by Donna Summer. The song was first released on Moroder’s 1992 album Forever Dancing. The following year, the song closed Summer’s two-disc set The Donna Summer Anthology.
During the 1970s Moroder had co-written and co-produced a large number of Summer’s disco hits, and this song marked the first time the two had worked together in more than a decade. The recording features background vocals by Summer’s children, Brooklyn and Amanda Grace Sudano, along with co-writers Waters and Moroder, and Larry Lee.
“Carry On” was released as a single in Germany in 1992 and some years later was remixed and became an international hit, reaching #25 on the U.S. Dance charts in 1997 and #65 on the UK Pop charts in 1998. That same year it won the first Grammy award for Best Dance Recording. (Wikipedia)

Thank God It’s Friday!

Thank God It's Friday!

OK, it’s only a Monday as I update this blog, but everyday feels like Friday at lovedisco.fm
The Disco / Dance Music vibe is always going on here!
I remember seeing a preview of the movie “Thank God It’s Friday” when it came out, I was about 10 years old and remember falling instantly in love with seeing Donna Summer on the big screen. Growing up in small, rural, Canadian prairie towns most of my life, meant that my favorite means of escape came with going to the movies every Friday night. If the movie was particularly of interest to me I would go again Saturday night, provided I had enough of my $2 allowance left (movies cost 50 cents back then for kids, but I still had to buy my treats which usually consisted of potato chips, red licorice or sponge toffee)
“Thank God It’s Friday” did not disappoint my 10 year old expectations. I loved it, and the soundtrack was one of the first vinyl albums I remember saving up to buy. I played that album so many times I literally wore it out.
I remember the film critics panned the movie, one had said it was one of the worst movies to win an Academy Award (It won best song for “Last Dance”)
It’s basically a multi-character, multi-story movie which takes place in a disco one Friday night. It features appearances by Paul Jabara (who wrote “Last Dance” among other tracks on the album), The Commodores, Terri Nunn (Lead singer of the group “Berlin“), Jeff Goldblum, Debra Winger, and Donna Summer‘s big screen debut.
The soundtrack still remains one of my favorites, and the movie is a true time capsule of the Disco era. Since it is a double album and a favorite, I’m going to let this movie soundtrack run for 2 weeks!! Happy Holidays!
